The City Sinners were formed by Glasgow based singer / songwriter John Hinshelwood in 2006. The main obective initially was to devise a show based on the life and music of the late Gram Parsons, and some of the top musicians working on the Scottish Americana circuit were recruited.
Gutarist Iain Barbour has accompanied many high profile artistes such as Jason Ringenberg and Jim Lauderdale. He is also much in demand as a session player, in addition to playing with Edinburgh based outfits Sunshine Delay and the Wynntown Marshalls.
Pedal steel player Malcolm McMaster has been a well known figure on the Scottish Country scene for many years with bands such as Route 65 and Jacksonville. He has also been involved in regular session work, and most recently played with the Radio Sweethearts and John Miller’s Country Casuals.
Bass player Tim Clarke has played in countless rock, pop and blues bands in the Glasgow area over the last 25 years, and was also involved with cult Country band Janet Jumps Bail in the 80s. Most recently he has been involved with the many, ever changing line ups of the John Hinshelwood Band, and harmonica wizard Fraser Speirs’ Blues band.
Following spells in the USA and Canada, Dick Drake returned to Scotland in the 80s to join the highly acclaimed Zydeco Ceilidh band, and since then has been one of the most sought after drummers in Scotland. He has enjoyed stints with many bands including the Nimmo Brothers, Fraser Speirs Blues Band, and Honest Sam and The Dealers, a band which also featured John Hinshelwood. He is currently also with folk rock combo String Driven.
The most recent addition is vocalist Sandra Gellatly who joined the band when original member Rebecca McChesney decided to move back home to Texas. Sandra worked as a singer and actor in her native Canada, before settling in Scotland in 2001. She has sung mainly on the folk circuit, but has always had a love of Country music old and new, and rates George Jones as one of her all time favourite singers.
John and Sandra recently released “Shattered Pleasures”, their debut CD as a duo. Most of the songs are originals, and the recording featured all the members of the City Sinners.
In addition to songs from the new CD,other originals, and many of those featured in the Parsons’ show, the Sinners have recently expanded their repertoire to include some more overtly Country material ranging from songs by old favourites such as Merle Haggard, George Jones and Merle Travis to more contemporary offerings by Travis Tritt, Alan Jackson and George Strait.
